I have been an Eddie Murphy fan since his days as Gumby on Saturday night live. His talent caught my eye from day one. This was not his typical role. He played a very serious role in this movie and it was different for me. He was not delivering the funnies and that was really different for me.

The time period was 1965 in Los Angeles. Marie (Natascha McElhone) a cancer fighting victim and her ten-year-old daughter Charlotte (Britt Robertson) are the main characters here until an African American cook named Mr. Church (Eddie Murphy) is hired by Marie’s former lover to help out during illness. This was almost a match made in heaven as Mr. Church becomes a father figure to Charlotte takes her in when she gets pregnant from a one-night stand years down the road. A different role for Eddie Murphy that was very pleasing to me.
