Queen Sugar was no joke when it premiered this week. Social media was all the buzz and let me tell you for very good reason. This series by Ava DuVernay, Melissa Carter and OWN’s very own Oprah Winfrey truly delivered. Baby it got real very quickly and you felt like a family member to the Bordelon Family. At least I did. I just wanted to help them like families help family.

The #BlackGirlMagic is so real in this series as the all-female staff delivers the real-life like struggles, triumphs and complicated ways the family has to survive in the midst of individual storms and family storms and THE family storm. The series comes from the Queen Sugar: A Novel by Natalie Baszile. Again, the #BlackGirlMagic coming out of this series is amazing! I will be watching it every Wednesday at night on OWN.

I just love the cast! They all were the perfect cast member for their roles. It was so heartwarming to see Glynn Turman and Tina Lifford again. Truth be told Ethan Hutchison stole my heart. He was so close to his grandfather as I was. Getting really open here … my grandfather passed at the family home and the scene was much like it was when Daddy Ernest passed. I even clearly remember a younger cousin (he was about four) trying to process everything and wanting to go with my granddaddy. Just like Blue that home was the only home he had known and he had a fatherly bond with our grandfather. Whew. I am fighting back tears recalling the play of events that day almost thirty years ago. I had a very challenging time let go of him. Granddaddy Wright was the only living grandfather I had the pleasure knowing. He loved his wife, ten children, and about twelve grandchildren at that time. I remember he would take his whole family to Piccadilly at Greenbrier Mall on some Sundays and he was so proud to feed us all at his expense. When our parents would offer to cover their family units he always said: “I got it”. I sure do miss him.

Be sure to keep an eye on Blue. I am sure he is going places in Hollywood. He should have a long career ahead of him.
